5 Tips to Improve your Gas Mileage

5 Tips to Improve your Gas Mileage

Did you know that YOU have the power to improve your car's gas mileage? Gas prices are constantly fluctuating. You never know when there is going to be a dip or spike in prices! With that being said, you want to make sure that the gas you buy is being used to the best of your car's ability.

Here are 5 tips to help improve your car's gas mileage:

1. Make sure your tires have the correct amount of air!

Tires that are over or underinflated can cause your vehicle to burn through more fuel, as it causes more resistance. Make sure that you maintain the correct air pressure in your tires. You can find out what your vehicle's tire pressure on the inside of your car door! Try to maintain the air to be in line with the manufacturer's recommendation.

2. Don't be an aggressive driver

Did you know that when you speed up and slow down abruptly it messes with your gas mileage? That's right! Driving aggressively is not ideal in achieving great gas mileage. Think of the saying "slow and steady wins the race". This is actually true when it comes to your vehicle's gas. Try to maintain a steady pace over constant acceleration & deceleration.

On another note- stop speeding, (not just because it's illegal) the faster you drive the more fuel you burn!

3. Maintain a squeaky clean car

You might be thinking, "what does that have to do with anything..." well let me tell you! Did you know the weight of your vehicle affects your gas mileage? Yep! So if you're like me and your trunk is full of things you just keep forgetting to take out, that's making your gas mileage worse! Try keeping any heavy items you're lugging around to a minimum.

4. Try to avoid idling

This one came as a shock to me personally. I was always told that turning your vehicle on and off wasted more gas than idling. Though- this simply isn't the case. Idling for longer than a minute actually uses up more gas than restarting your engine! The more you know.

5. Avoid overuse of air conditioning

Now, I know how this may sound to my fellow Arizonans.... Simply impossible. Personally, I like to always have my a/c on. Ways to avoid using it constantly would be rolling down the windows in the colder months!

In the summer... Well, there's not much you can do so crank that a/c up! You can try parking in the shade (if you can find some) and putting up a windshield cover to keep the sun out.

If you're in a location that doesn't have a summer like sitting in a hot oven- I'm sure rolling down your windows will help with your gas mileage significantly!

All in all, you can try to keep your wallet happy by using the tips above to use less gas!
